Repair or Replace? Small Engine Repair Calculator
Enter your repair quote, how old the machine is and what a comparable new one costs. Nothing you type leaves your browser.
How the recommendation works
- R1 — Replace if the repair is 50% or more of the new price.
- R2 — Replace if the repair, spread over the years the machine has left, costs more per year than a new machine costs per year of its life.
- R3 — Repair if the repair is 25% or less of the new price.
- R4 — Borderline otherwise: repair if the rest of the machine is sound, and get a second quote.
Typical service lives used (rules of thumb, not measured data): lawn mower8 yr, riding mower12 yr, zero-turn mower12 yr, chainsaw10 yr, string trimmer7 yr, leaf blower7 yr, snow blower12 yr, pressure washer8 yr, generator12 yr, tiller12 yr. Heavy commercial use shortens these; careful storage and maintenance lengthen them.
